We are excited to announce that spring is here (well, in our minds anyways—things are melting fast with all the rain and heat over the weekend)! We're opening for orders soon, and we’ve got plenty of exciting updates, workshops, and opportunities to share with you.
We’re gearing up for another exciting season here at Beautiful Field Farm and Fruit Trees!
Order Opening: Starting April 1st at 10 AM, our website will be open for orders. Be sure to mark your calendars and check out all the trees we have available. Get your orders in early to secure the trees you want for your garden!
Stock Updates: We’ve been working with our nurseries to bring you the best selection of hardy fruit trees, and we’re getting everything prepped for the season. The website will be updated over the next couple of weeks with all the new items for this season.
This spring, we’re hosting two workshops to help you with all things tree care and propagation!
Pruning and Grafting Workshop: Join us on April 12th for an afternoon of hands-on learning. We’ll cover the essentials of pruning and tree care (11 AM - 1 PM) followed by a grafting session (1:30 PM - 3:30 PM). Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, this workshop will provide you with the skills to take your orchard to the next level!
Algoma Lost Apple Project: I’ll be on St. Joseph’s Island for a grafting workshop and scion exchange with the Algoma Lost Apple Project on March 29th. This is a fantastic chance to learn about heritage apples and contribute to preserving rare varieties. If you’re interested, let us know!
For anyone interested in doing some grafting, or who has an interesting or unique tree at their place, I am always looking to trade, exchange, or buy/sell scions. Please send me an email to discuss!
We’re thrilled to introduce Spouting's Flora Farms, the kids’ new business venture! They had so much fun last year with their flower seedlings, plant propagation, and bee houses and crafts that they have some big plans for this year.
This year, they’ll be once again offering 9 varieties of wildflower seedlings:
They’re also planning to start a few vegetable seedlings as well!
Spoutlings Flora Farms will also be offering garden cleanup services:
This includes tasks like splitting annuals, controlling raspberry suckers, and digging up extra plants from people’s gardens. They’ll be saving and replanting these plants for resale. If you’re planning to do this yourself and don’t have a new home in mind for your plants, the kids are excited to accept your donations (and I know if you ask their dad nicely, he could probably give you a tree or something in exchange as well).
If you’re interested in having them at your place, just send me an email or reach out on social media, and we’ll figure out when we can attend your place. They don’t have a set price and are happy to accept whatever you’re willing to pay them.
We’re looking for someone to join our team for the season! I will also be looking for some summer students shortly, but I need someone to “be in charge” when I’m not around and help me with getting things done and maintaining all the exciting things I keep creating and expanding.
For those who have been following along the last few years, you know I always have big plans, new projects, and ideas, but sometimes they never come to fruition. I need someone who can manage and help maintain the day-to-day operations and keep everything running smoothly.
I’ll likely need someone on-site 2-4 days/week from mid-April to early October, but it would be quite flexible. We also have the opportunity to make this a live-in position, where we would offer room and board for the candidate.
Responsibilities:
General Farm Maintenance:
Administrative & Operational Support:
We’ve got a lot of exciting plans lined up for the farm this year, and we can’t wait to share them with you! Here’s what to look forward to in 2025:
Self-Serve Farm Store:
We’re working hard to create a self-serve farm store this year. This season, you’ll be able to stop by anytime to buy gardening products (grafting/pruning supplies, pest products, fertilizers, etc.). We will eventually be offering eggs, fruit, berries, and produce. If prearranged, you can also help yourself to your tree orders. We have many ideas for what we can offer at this self-serve store/farm stand, and we look forward to having it available soon!
Expanded U-Pick Services:
We’re excited to offer more U-Pick options this year. Haskaps were a success last year, and this year we should be able to offer apples, pears, plums, currants, and other fruits/berries as the season progresses. We hope to make this a fun, family-friendly experience where you can come, pick fresh fruit, and enjoy the farm! Keep an eye out for more details as we finalize the dates for each picking season.
Regular Drop-In Educational Sessions:
This year, we’re considering regular drop-in sessions where you can join us for hands-on learning about all things farming! I’ve always figured that if I’m out pruning my trees or doing some planting, it would be great to have company instead of talking to myself. I can explain exactly what and why I’m doing something. It will be a great way to learn how to properly prune your fruit trees, get tips on gardening techniques, or discover sustainable farming practices. These sessions will provide you with useful knowledge that you can apply to your own garden or farm. Sessions will be informal, and we encourage you to ask questions, watch us work, and get involved.
Infrastructure and Building Projects:
We’re focusing on several key infrastructure projects this year to make the farm even more welcoming and functional. One of our major projects is finishing the pavilion, which will serve as a space for workshops, community events, and other farm activities.
Additionally, we’re committed to native tree planting and species preservation. This season, we’ll be planting more native trees around the farm and focusing on preserving heritage species to help strengthen the local ecosystem. These efforts will not only benefit the farm but also support biodiversity in the area.
We are incredibly excited for this season, and we can’t wait to share everything we’ve been working on with you. As always, thank you for supporting Beautiful Field Farm and Fruit Trees.
If you have any questions or want to get involved in the workshops or Spoutling's Flora Farms, feel free to reach out! We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on the farm this spring.
